Father Benjamin Burnley, mother Amelia Burnley. FHL film number 990588. Reference ID:p504 Warner & Beers 1883 History of the County of Brant, page 497, has a biography for Thomas Burnley. This dates his birth to June 3, 1829, in Yorkshire, England. He is said to be the son of Benjamin Burnley, a farmer, who lived out his life in England and who married Amelia Barber. The biography goes on to say that Benjamin and Amelia had 11 children of whom 8 were living at the time the biography was written. It also states that three of their children were in Canada. The biography goes on to say that he was married in August of 1852 to Hannah Mills, and here it appears that there is an error. Looking over marriage and death records for the children it appears that Hannah's maiden name was Milnes and is shown as such in this tree. The biography tells that Thomas and Hannah came to Canada in 1853, and this is possible. The 1861 and 1871 censuses say that son Samuel was born in England. He is shown in the 1861 census as being 8 years old (as of his next birthday, if the question was asked and answered aright). If so, then Samuel was an infant at the time of their departure. The Warner & Beers biography tells that Thomas worked in the Grand Trunk Railroad Car Shops in Brantford. Apparently, there was such a thing as the Grand Trunk Brigade, a militia unit, in which Thomas was a volunteer. At some point, this was merged with Dufferin Rifles from which he retired with the rank of First Lieutenant. (Little in the way of information has been found to do with these militia units. Your researcher's first acquaintance with them was found in Thomas Burnley's biography.) The 1901 census at Brantford was begun in March of the year and dates Thomas's birth to 3 June 1828. He is shown as age 85 on his gravestone in Greenwood Cemetery and age 84 on his death registration. The biography dates his birth to 1829 and so does the 1911 census. Death reg. 007787-15 Brantford, Brant Co. Thomas Burney died April 6, 1915, age 84. Born Yorkshire, England. Place of death 17 Marlboro Street. Gentleman. Widower. Father Benjamin Burnley.
