James Field of Niagara Township to Maria Medaugh of Stamford Township
10 May 1828 by licence of R. Grant.

Maria's surname has been found variously spelled, but seems to have been Middaugh.

DeathHe died on 11 October 1872 at age 69.
BurialHe was buried at Copetown Cemetery, Ancaster Twp., Wentworth Co..
NoteHe Notes for James Field Sr. and his family are taken to some extent from the 1851 and 1861 censuses in Ancaster Township. Per James and Maria's marriage notes, they were resident in the Niagara District at the time - James in Niagara Township and Maria in Stamford. (Niagara Township contains such communities at St. David's, Queenston, present day Niagara-on-the-Lake, and Virgil. Stamford Township as been subsumed by the City of Niagara Falls, but at the time included such communities as Clifton, Drummondville, and a part of the village of Chippawa.)

Another source is Volume 1 of Ancaster's Heritage, page 223 and is to be found under Mrs. Mabel K. Dunham's notes relating to lot 18 of the 1st Concession of Ancaster. This makes mention that son Hiram was a waggon maker by trade and it seems likely that he learned his trade in the home of George Howell (see note in next paragraph.

Initially, we take the list of the children of James and Maria as shown in the 1851 census in Ancaster. This includes Deborah, who was married in 1859. It does not include, however, sons Hiram and Benjamin. As of the 1851 census, they are shown as 'servants' in the home of George Howell, who is a waggon maker. An oddity here is that Hiram is shown twice, both times as age 18, but once as a Wesleyan Methodist and once as a Universalist. Barring an unforseen 'twist', we'll guess that this was an enumerator's error - probably. (There was another Hiram Field who was a Universalist.) Benjamin Field is listed immediately after brother Hiram.

By the time of the 1861 census, Hiram and Benjamin are back with their parents.

Such information that we have for the passing of James Field is to be found on what we must believe is his gravestone in Copetown Cemetery, for a death registration has not been found.

His gravestone tells that he died on October 11, 1872, age 69 and 2 months. There is no indication that another immediate family member was buried in the cemetery at Copetown. A place of burial for his wife Maria Middaugh has not been found.

Such information that does help is to be found on the not entirely legible Abstract Index for lot 18 on the 1st concession of Ancaster. This tells that James had a will written on October 1st, 1872, and that it was registered on November 1st, 1872. This would appear to support the impression that James Field, the husband of Maria Middaugh, is indeed buried in Copetown Cemetery.
