Emily Priestman
ID # 7482, (1836-1887)
Father | Joseph Priestman (1809-1887) |
Mother | Elizabeth Shotwell (1816-1871) |
Birth | Emily Priestman was born on 23 March 1836 at Wainfleet Twp., Niagara District. |
Marriage | She married Henry Penrose Husband, son of James Husband and Hannah Hoowee. A marriage registration for Henry and Emily has not been found. Looking over the births of their children, they were no doubt married in the early to mid 1850s and, mostly, marriages from this era were not registered. Another aspect regarding the marriage of Henry P. Husband and Emily B. Husband has been found. The Canadian Friends Historical Society at Newmarket, Ontario, has a transcription of a document (this is said to be 'new') entitled Archives H-7-4, Pelham Monthly Meeting, 1834-1866, and which provides minutes for a meeting dated 2 Janujary, 1861. A portion thereof reads as follows: An acknowledgement came before this meeting signed by Henry P Husband and Emily B Husband for their accomplishing their marriage by the assistance of a Hireling minister. They wishing friends to overlook their offence in transgressing their order and continue them in membership with friends. Unquote. This doesn't tell us the date of marriage, but does provide information as to their religious affiliation. An additional minute from this document dated 1878 refers to who we must believe to be Henry as Penrose Husband. |
Death | She died on 8 August 1887 at Wainfleet Twp., Welland Co., Ontario, at age 51. |
Burial | She was buried at Pelham Hicksite Quaker Cemetery. |
Note | Available Society of Friends (Quakers) documentation does show Priestman children born to family members resident in Wainfleet Township, but Emily's name does not appear. From the look of the available documentation it seems likely that some records are missing. See below for the calculation of Emily's date of birth. The 1881 census shows Emily in Wainfleet Township with son Wilton Husband. They are shown as Quakers. Death reg. 017251-87 Wainfleet Twp., Welland Co. Emily P. Husband died August 8, 1887. Age 48. Farmer's wife. Born Wainfleet. 'Deciple'. Physician Dr. Haney. Informant Jos. Stewart, Wainfleet. Emily is recorded as being buried in the Pelham Hicksite Quaker Cemetery. There is a problem with the recording of her stone that may be caused by weathering and, to a degree, making a guess....or it may be an old fashioned typographical error. Emily's gravestone is clear enough relative to her death date, for this agrees with her death registration as shown above. Her stone says that she died on August 8, 1887. Her death registration shows her age as 48; the gravestone shows her age as 51 years, 4 months, 16 days. This would place her date of birth to 23 March, 1836, which is probably approximate. The problematic part of the transcription would have her as the wife of Earnest Husband. There is a stone for an Earnest who died in childhood and reads that he was a year old and the son of Jos. and Cora Husband. He was actually the son of Joseph Steward and Cora Husband. The date of Emily's death on both her stone and registration make it clear enough that we are dealing with the same person. Emily's death registration tells that she was born in Wainfleet Township, at the time a part of the Niagara District, but later a township of Welland County. Library & Archives Canada tells that the 1851 census for Wainfleet has not survived. By the time of the 1861 census, 'Penrose' and Emily are in Wainfleet and have with them son Wilton, age 2. He was probably born in approximately 1859. See marriage notes that indicate that Henry and Emily were members of the Society of Friends. The 1861 census, none-the-less, whether in fact or error, has them as members of the 'E. Church'. Whether we interpret this as the English Church or the Episcopal Church, if correct, it would mean that at least for the moment, they were Anglicans. As mentioned, the 1851 census for Wainfleet Township has not survived. By the time of the 1861 census, Emily Priestman and Henry (Penrose) Husband are married, and, hence, we do not see Emily in census with her birth family. It is safe to say, however, that Emily is the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth. Abstract Index information for lot 24 in the 4th concession of Wainfleet shows the purchase of the lot by Joseph Priestman. With time, portions of this lot are sold off by Joseph. Purchasers include Henry Husband and Emily Husband, the latter transaction quite separate. In other words, she owns a portion of the lot in her own right. Also, with Henry and Emily in the 1871 census is Annie Shotwell who we may safely say is Emily's aunt. Annie is still with Emily as of the 1881 census, which is some months after the death of Henry. And if none of that is convincing...Emily is buried in Pelham Hicksite Quaker Cemetery beside her father Joseph. |
