Richard Husband
ID # 7463, (1824-1907)
Father | George Husband (-1846) |
Mother | Mary Phair (-1840) |
Birth | Richard Husband was born on 15 July 1824 at Ireland. |
Baptism | He was baptized on 21 July 1824 at St. John's, Limerick, Co. Limerick, Ireland. |
Marriage | He married Ellener Lowery Teeple, daughter of Eli Teeple and Margaret Zimmerman, on 6 July 1848 at Nelson Township, Gore District. For the following, refer Vol. 3, More Notices from Methodist Papers, 1830-1857, by Rev. Donald A. McKenzie, Global Heritage Press, 2010, pages 92 & 93, which is in turn extracted from the Canada Christian Advocate, Aug. 22, 1848 edition, page 139. This tells that Richard Husband and Elanor Teeple, both of Nelson Township, were married on July 6th, at the residence of the bride's father, by Rev. J. Tufford. A record of the above marriage has not been found in a District marriage register. We will note here as a possible assist for research purposes that Rev. John Carpenter Tufford was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Ellener's death registration tells that her parents were Eli Teeple and Margaret Zimmerman. Census information places Eli and Margaret in Nelson Township, certainly as of the 1851 and 1861 censuses. This also tells that they were of the Methodist Episcopal church. |
Death | He died on 8 October 1907 at Moorefield, Maryborough Twp., Wellington Co., at age 83. |
Burial | He was buried at Bethesda Cemetery, Maryborough Twp., Wellington Co.. |
Note | Census and death information for Richard is consistent in placing his birth in Ireland. His gravestone in Bethesda Cemetery in Maryborough Township, Wellington County, dates his birth to 15 July 1826. (His baptism in Ireland was in 1824 so 1826 as a birth year must be incorrect.) Since this agrees well with his age in different census years, we must believe that his parents, father George at least, did not come out to Canada until after this date. Richard's Uncle James appears in a census for Pelham Township in 1828, but Richard's father, George, is not shown. George does appears in a Pelham Township assessment roll in 1836, concession and lot not stated, but this is probably well after George's emigration. A land transaction is to be found for George, dated 1836, wherein he purchases a quarter acre of lot 15 in the 19th concession of Pelham. It's entirely possible that George's land purchase was well after his arrival in Pelham Township, but he was probably not in Pelham until after 1828. Richard was probably not much more than a toddler when his family came to Canada. Richard's baptism: Per GS film nbr. 874438 Christening on 21 July, 1824, Richard Husband. Parents George and Mary Husband. Henry Husband, son of John Husband, in his diary entry for October 14, 1907, tells of receivng a letter to the effect that his cousin, Richard Husband, son of his uncle George, had died. The page with the diary entry may be viewed at Halinet: http://images.oakville.halinet.on.ca/2671501/page/54?n= This diary entry does us the favour of confirming that George, Richard's father, was one of the Husband family brothers who emigrated to Canada. As mentioned under notes for father George, George made a will to which Richard Husband of Nelson was a witness. (We know that Richard was George's son from the entry in Henry Husband's diary, mentioned above.) George's will was made in 1846 and Richard was no doubt in Nelson at the time. The 1851 census for Nelson Township has survived. Richard is not present there at the time - he may have been in Walpole Township - but his Uncle Robert Husband is present and Robert's household is enumerated immediately prior to the household of Eli Teeple. Richard no doubt met Ellener Lowery Teeple by way of visiting with his Uncle Robert. (The 1861 Nelson census is the reverse. The Eli Teeple household was enumerated immediately prior to that of Robert Husband.) Richard was a harness maker and to put it mildly, he got around. We have no information as to where son Eli was born - quite possibly Nelson, for the family is there as of the 1851 census, which was begun in January of 1852. Son George's death registration places his birth in Nassagaweya Township, immediately north of Nelson Township. Richard's Uncle John Husband was in Nassagaweya. This would have been in approximately 1852. Daughter Matilda's death registration places her birth, 1856, in Walpole Township, Haldimand County. As of the 1871 census, the family is in the village of Orillia in Simcoe County. Son Richard Wellington Husband is born in Milton in 1872. The 1881 census has them in Howick Township of Huron County. The 1891 census has them in Huron Township of Bruce County. Death reg. 031819-07 Maryborough Twp., Wellington Co. Richard Husband died October 8, 1907, age 81. Retired. Married. Residence Moorefield. Born Ireland. Methodist. Physician and informant Dr. Munns. |
