Note | The death registration for Catherine Delmage places her birth in Harwich Township. At the time, this was in the Western District, though it was later a township of Kent County. The 1851 census has not survived for Harwich, neither the every person census nor the agricultural census, but both have survived for 1861. This places Catherine's father, John F. Delmage, on lot 15 of the 1st concession. He appears to be on a half lot. A problem here is that there are three surveys in Harwich and the agricultural census page does not make mention of which survey the Delmages are on. The presence of a family on a lot in an agricultural census does not necessarily mean that the own the property. They may only be renting. Onland.ca, the website for the website of the Ontario Land Registry Access has a fairly good and legible showing of the surveys. The abstract index pages for the River Thames survey, the Lake Erie Survey, and the East and West Communication Road surveys have been examined and the Delmage name does not appear. It is possible that they were renting land, though this is not conclusive. There is a microfilm series known as the Township Papers (this is to be found on the MS658 series of reels, specifically reels 183 thru 186, but which is not available online) and this could have a story to tell.
