| Note | At first glance, there were sufficient George Arthur Sayers to be found via the FreeBMD index that it wasn't clear which one he was. Parentage is not given on this index. It is clear from his marriage registration, however, that his parents were James and Eliza. Add to that, we find George in Chatham with his parents and siblings as of the 1881 census in Chatham. His sisters include Alice and Emma. With this information, a passenger list was found for the SS Ganges sailing from London to Quebec City and which arrived on 14 July 1870. The family sailed on this ship and is shown as: James Sayer, 48, labourer Eliza 44 Eliza 17 James 15 Ann 13 Mary 11 George 9 Alice 7 Emma 4 With this information, James and his family may be found in the 1861 census at Islington in Middlesex. The youngest child present is George A., age 1. With this, a baptism record for George Arthur Sayer may be found from information provided by the London Metropolitan Archives and made available by Ancestry.The baptism is to be found in a baptism record book of the Parish of Islington from the mid 1860s. This shows George and his sister Alice being baptized on 5 June, 1864. George's date of birth is given as 26 October, 1859. No, this does not agree with his date of birth as shown on his gravestone in Maple Leaf Cemetery in Chatham, nor does it agree with his date of birth as it appears on his death registration. These show his year of birth as 1866. At the time of his marriage to Catherine Delmage Alma in 1893, however, he does show his age as 33 and this will be correct or nearly so. Death reg. 019604-29 Chatham, Kent Co. George Arthur Sayer died on 7 September, 1929, at 93-1/2 King Street West. Age 62 years, 10 months, 12 days. Born England October 26, 1866. Barrister. Parents James Sayer and Eliza Thurston, both Born England. Physician F. W. Hall, Chatham. Informant Miss Emma Sayer of Chatham, sister. Burial September 10, 1929.
