Note | The passenger list for the Brittania, Liverpool to New York, 1832, shows and confirms John's place in his family. There, he is shown as John P. Alma, age 2. His sister, Emily Joanna, immediately previous in the birth order of his siblings, was born in Valparaiso, Chili, for so we are told by the 1851 census at Niagara as well as her gravestone, so it is reasonable when next we find John P Alma in the 1861 census at Oakville, his place of birth is shown as South America. His marriage registration is frustrating in that his parentage is left blank on the form and his place of birth is given as England. This is clarified when we see on his death registration of October of 1877 that he was indeed born in South America and we find that he his buried with his wife Catherine Delmage, who we find remarried. She and her husbands are in Maple Leaf Cemetery in Chatham. The 1871 census is even more devoid of information so far as Peter and Catherine are concerned than their marriage registration, unusual for this census. Death reg. 005688-77 Chatham, Kent Co.
