Note | Henry's dates of birth and death are taken from a transcription of his inscription on the family gravestone in Harpurhey Presbyterian Cemetery as transcribed by the Huron County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. This shows his date of birth as MaY 26, 1843, and his date of death as Feb. 5, 1897. This also shows his place of death as Banff, Alberta. It may be that he is buried in Banff and that his name is commorated on the family gravestone. According to census information, Henry was a barrister and an obituary for him may yet be found that tells a fuller story. Once the cross country railroad was built, it wasn't unheard of for remains to be returned from western Canada to a hometown in, say, Ontario. Henry's place of birth as shown in the 1851 census isn't clear, but seems to imply that he was born in Germany. The 1861 and 1871 censuses show his birth as being in Canada. Considering that his father Ludwig obtained the farm upon which the family resided in 1842, a Canadian birth for Henry seems quite likely. Henry is said to reside in Wingham at the time he married Helen Elizabeth Ross. As mentioned above, we do not know the story of his death in Banff, Alberta, and we do not know if he is buried there or actually buried in the Meyer family plot at Harpurhey Cemetery as his gravestone implies. What we may say is that with Helen dead in 1887 and Henry likewise in 1897, their three daughters are then orphaned. As of the 1891 census, with Henry still living, his daughters are with him in Wingham as well as his sisters Elizabeth and Louise. As of the 1901 census, his three daugters are with their maternal grandmother, Agnes Ross, in Toronto. |
