Note | The McGill University County maps project for Southern Ontario places Ludwig Meyer's 'settlement' in 1831. This does not exactly state that this was in Tuckersmith Township, though this appears to be the inference. This information is said to be extracted from an 1879 atlas and identifies Ludwig as a Clerk of the Division Court. This information is also to be found on the 1871 census page which shows Ludwig as a farmer, but then has Clerk of the Division Court written in underneath. The extraction for this map places both Ludwig and son Henry (H. W. C. Meyer) in Tuckersmith Township. Henry is shown as a barrister and the atlas might be interpreted as having them working in the town of Seaforth. The 1871 census places them in McKillop Township and a further examination of the McGill project's map and land owners for McKillop shows Ludwig as being on lot 32 of concession 1 in McKillop. This is a 100 acres property in McKillop that borders the township of Tuckersmith and is a very short distance west of the village of Seaforth and close to the village of Harpurhey. Per Library & Archives Canada (LAC), the 1851 census for Tuckersmith Township in Huron County has not survived. Per the Ontario Land Registry Access website (onland), the abstract index for lot 32 on the 1st concession of McKillop Township shows the crown granting a patent to the Canada Company in what appears to be 1830. (This is not a very clear rendering of the document. The Archives of Ontario may have the same series under the GSU microfilm reels which were created by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and which are usually of very readable quality. Also, it should be kept in mind that the abstract indexes were not actually created until 1867 in response to a law of the day.) Ludwig Meyer received this property from the Canada Company on April 15, 1842, though he did not register it until after 1850 (the date is not entirely readable). Such a late registration was not uncommon. Ludwig died in 1886 and there are at least two transactions that involved family members up until 1892, the entries for which are not very readable. The list of children shown for Ludwig and Adolphine, at least initially, is based on census information - the 1851 thru 1871 censuses - as enumerated in McKillop Township. Ages for the younger children as they appear in these censuses are rather variable. The 1851 every-person census for McKillop Township has survived; the agricultural census has not. Ludwig and Adolphine are present with children Henry 9; Mary 7; Elizabeth 4; and John 2. John's name has for some reason been overwritten, but looking over the 1861 and 1871 censuses, we must believe his name to be John. The 1861 census shows the family with additions to their family, Louisa 7; Matilda 3; and Margart 5. They are out of order as shown and there may have been some confusion for they are differently ordered in the 1871 census. The 1871 census shows they family thus: Ludwig 61, farmer and clerk of the div. court. Adolphine 55, Henry 27, a barrister Mary 25 Elizabeth 23 John 20, a farmer Margaret 17 Louisa 15 Mattie (Matilda) 14 The 1851 and 1861 census show the family as Lutheran. The 1871 census shows Ludwig and Adolphine as Lutheran and then it shows Henry and the rest of the children as Church of England. It's tempting to wonder if the ditto marks following Henry's religious affiliation for the rest of the children were really meant to show that while Henry had become a member of the Church of England, the rest of the children were still Lutheran. This interpretation is probably wrong, for the 1881 census shows Ludwig and Adolphine as Lutheran and the remaining children at home as Church of England. At the end, it would appear that Ludwig had joined the Church of England. Death reg. 007530-86 Seaforth, Huron Co. Ludwig G. Meyer died March 14th 1886. Age 77. Gentleman. Born Germany. Church of England. Physician H. G. McKid, M.D. Informant Rev. Wm. Craig, Clinton. A further note: As mentioned above, Ludwig purchased his 100 acre lot 32 on the 1st concession of McKillop Township on 15 April 1842. On the same day Adolph Meyer purchased lot 33 on the 1st. The 1851 every person census shows Adolph Meyer, a widower, in the next household, apparently with a daughter. The 1861 census shows Adolph still in his own household, apparently with a son and daughter. He also appears on the agricultural census page as being on C1-L33. Ludwig, on the same page, is on lot 32. The 1871 census shows Adolph, age 68, in Ludwig's household. Where Adolph was as of the 1881 census has not been found, but he died in Seaforth in 1886 at age 76. His place of birth is shown as Rostock, Sweden, but Rostock, Germany, is almost certainly correct. He is buried in Harpurhey Cemetery with his wife, Ellen M. Stinson, who died in 1847. Adolph and Ludwig, it is safe to say were brothers. More investigation is required, but Ancestry presents a database entitled Germany, Lutheran Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1500-1971. Here, in Rostock, Mecklenburg, we find in 1803 the baptism of Adolph Friedrich Meyer on 24 October, birth 21 October. His parents were Franz Heinrich Meyer and Maria Helena Spangenberg. Also, in the same place, the baptism of Georg Ludwig Meyer on 1 May 1809, birth 25 Apr 1809. This is exactly one year before the date of birth as shown on Ludwig's gravestone in Harpurhey Cemetery. More work is required, but it would appears that the parents of Adolph and Ludwig and Franz Heinrich Meyer and Maria Helena Spangenberg. If this is correct, then another brother and sister for Ludwig and Adolph have been found. Death reg. 007530-86 Seaforth, Huron Co. Ludwig G. Meyer died March 14th 1886. Age 77 years. Gentleman.
