| Note | Lydia's marriage registration indicates that she was born in Iowa. This appears to be correct. The 1860 U. S. census, enumerated at Jackson Township, Iowa, shows her with her parents and siblings. Her parents and older siblings are all shown as being born in France. She is the first of the family shown as being born in Iowa. Her age is given as 5, which would place her birth in approximately 1855. The family appears in the 1880 census in Jackson County, but the available image is extremely faint. The 1900 census at Chicago dates her birth to August of 1856 and this is shown here, though we note that the 1856 Iowa State Census shows her as age 4. |
