Mary's gravestone shows her date of birth as Nov. 8, 1848. The 1901 census appears to show Mary's date of birth the same, though it is ill written.

There is one document that rather throws us a curve and that's the Wesleyan Methodist Baptism record for Mary Jane. This is a page for North Dorchester and it presents us with a baptism for two children for Dan and Ann Buchanan, and one is Mary Jane. The parents are said to be resident in North Dorchester and Mary Jane's place of birth is said to be New Brunswick. Also, her date of baptism by Rev. J. Carroll is said to have been on 5 May 1851. All of which is reasonable. The problem comes when Mary Jane's date of birth is entered as 8 Mar., 1851. It's tempting to at least make 8 November out of this until we remember that she was baptized in May of the same year. What happened with this entry we do not know, but we must believe it to be a transcription error of some sort.
