Note | James Timmins appears in the 1861 census at Nepean Township, Carleton County. He is shown as age 38, born Ireland, and a carter. With him is wife Elizabeth, age 28. Also present are daughters 'Eliza' (Elizabeth), age 6, and Margaret, age 5. James is shown as belonging to the Church of England and wife Elizabeth is also shown as such. Considering that the Wesleyan Methodist baptisms show daughters Margaret and Mary being baptized in that church and that later census years show Elizabeth, wife of James as a Methodist, we must believe that she was such at this time. We must also believe that Mary has not survived, for she is not to be found after the record of her baptism. Daughter Elizabeth does not appear in the Wesleyan record, but this may only have to do with the interest of a given clergyman in returning the baptism information to a central record office. It becomes obvious examining the various records that this was rather 'hit and miss'. Later census years show James as Church of England, but show his wife as Wesleyan Methodist. The Wesleyan Baptism records show Rev. James Brock as the officiating clergyman and that he performed the baptisms for Margaret and Mary on April 5, 1858. Later that year he was evidently serving in Brockville. The 1871 census in Nepean Township shows James Timmins as 45, a drayman, born in Ireland, and Wesleyan Methodist. Elizabeth is 38, Wesleyan Methodist and born Scotland. With them are daughters Elizabeth, 16, and Margaret, 15. The 1881 census in Nepean shows James back in the fold of the Church of England, which he may never have left. He is 55 and a teamster; Elizabeth is 48 and Wesleyan Methodist. With them is daughter Maggie, age 24. Daughter Elizabeth is out of the parental home by this time for she married John Dixon in 1873. Daughter Margaret married John Cumming in 1882. Which leads us to the 1891 census page in Neapean Township, which is interesting, for two thirds of it is entirely made up of the Timmins extended family. James and Elizabeth Timmins, ages 68 and 58, are present in their own household. The two preceding households, however, are those of their daughters. Elizabeth is shown with husband John Dixon and seven children, and Margaret is shown with husband Donald Cumming and three children. Death reg. 003336-95 Ottawa, Carleton Co. James Timmins died June 3rd, 1895. Age 69 years, teamster, Methodist. Born Connaught, Ireland. Cause of death general debility. Physician Dr. H. Hill. Informant Elizabeth Dixon. Ancestry carries images of the Beechwood Cemetery, Ottawa, burial books. This shows James' burial as June 6, 1895. It repeats most of the information in the above death registration and his year of birth as 1826. It also shows his residence as 117 Spruce Street in Ottawa. This record shows his cause of death as jaundice. It goes on to tell that he was buried in section 40, lot 31, E. Pt. |
