Witnesses Sylvanus Cornell and Susan Mulholland John and Anna were married by license in Dumfries Township by Rev. James Strang of First Church, Galt, but they were probably not affiliated with the church, for the First Church baptisms record no Kirkpatrick children. The record places John and Anna as being of Waterloo, probably the township. The southern border of Waterloo Township was only a little to the north of Galt. |
Death | She died on 29 May 1856. |
Burial | She was buried at Sheffield Cemetery, Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co.. |
Note | See pages 480 and 481 of Ezra Eby's second volume of A Biographical History of Waterloo Township, 1896. Eby identifies Anna as the daughter of Adam Shupe, 1793-1878, and Mary Springer, 1799-1888. They resided near Freeport in Waterloo Township for many years, though spent their last years with a daughter Sallie Shupe Clemens at Moline, Michigan. In turn, Eby identifies Adam Shupe as a son of old John Shupe, 1759-1812. He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and married Elizabeth Diefenbach. They are said to have come to Canada in 1801 and settled on the east bank of the Grand River near Freeport. Eby says little of Anna other than that she married a Mr. Kirkpatrick and that they resided in Beverly Township of Wentworth County. Anna is clearly enough identified in First Church's marriage book. Also, son John's death registration in Galt in 1910 shows his mother as Anne Shupe. She died in 1856 and is buried in Sheffield Cemetery. Her year of birth is approximated from her age, 34, at the time of death as it appears on her gravestone. |
