| Note | William Smith appears in the 1870 and 1880 censuses as enumerated in New Haven Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. With him is wife Elizabeth and children, the first of whom is shown as Mary, born in Michigan approximately 1866. William and Elizabeth are shown as being born in Canada. We may reasonably take William to be the son of Samuel Smith and Adelia Benedict for the reason that wife Elizabeth died in 1898 and William remarried in 1900. His marriage registration locates his residence in Owosso and clearly names his parents as Samuel Smith and Adelia Benedict. We show William as being born in Canada. Probably, he was born in Beverly Township, Gore District, but this remains to be confirmed. William died, apparently in Shiawassee County, in 1913, and is buried in West Haven Cemetery, New Haven Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. He is buried with Elizabeth, his first wife. Death registrations for Elizabeth and William have not been found. See notes for Elizabeth relating to her maiden name. This tree shows her maiden name as Amor, though this may not be quite correct. |
