Burial | She was buried at St. Andrews Presbyterian Cemetery, Port Dalhousie. |
Note | Helen Bone and her husband John Black are buried in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Cemetery at Port Dalhousie (this is now a United Church cemetery). The Niagara branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society published a transcription of this cemetery in 1990 (revised 2001) and this indicates deterioration for the gravestone of John and Helen. The base of the stone with the name Black was still present at the time (row 4, stone 1), but the gravestone itself was found in a pile in a corner of the cemetery. The stone was still readable: In memory of John Black who died Aug. 11, 1885, age 66 years. Also Helen Bone his wife who died April 10, 1855, age 36 years. A note tells that a descendant states that the stone belongs with the base found in row 4. Associated burials indicate that this is reasonable. Helen's date of death is the same date as the birth of her youngest child, so we must believe that she died in childbirth. Daughters Magdalene and Helen Lourie (or Lawrie) appear with their husbands on the same page of the 1901 Ottawa census and they tell that they came to Canada in 1855. Considering that Magdalene was born in Scotland in 1853 this is at least reasonable, but considering the time of year for what was still a long sea voyage, a portion thereof being made in winter weather, not to mention for a pregnant woman, 1854 might have been the actual year of their arrival in Canada. Jamieson Black appears in the 1901 census at St. Catharines and while the year of his immigration isn't entirely legible, it does appear that 1854 is what is written. Such information as is available for John Kirkwood Black is of no assistance. A passenger list showing the family has not been found. Helen's passing was probably in Port Dalhousie, but we have no statement to this effect as her death was prior to the civil registration of deaths in the province. We will mention here that as of the family's first appearance in Canada West, as recorded in the 1861 census in Grantham Township, John Black's sister Margaret appears with the family. She is shown with her initial only in the 1861 census. She is shown as Margaret Black, age 53, in the 1871 census at Port Dalhousie. Margaret died in 1873. Death reg. 034767-73 Port Dalhousie, Lincoln Co. Margaret Black died 27 July, 1873. Age 59. Spinster. Presbyterian. Born Scotland. Physicians Drs. Clark and Considine. Informant Jamieson Black, nephew. Aung Margaret Black's gravestone is in row 6 of the cemetery and actually next to the gravestone of Eliza and Adam Craise. |
