| Note | John Black and Helen Bone appear in the 1851 census of Scotland. John is shown as age 31, a cooper, and he resides with his family on Glasgow Road, Wishaw, Lanarkshire. John's place of birth is given as Leith, Midlothian. His wife Helen is shown as age 33 and as being born in Dunbar, East Lothian. The couple have with them three children in 1851: John Kirkwood Black, age 7 Jamieson Bone Black, age 5 Helen Lourie Black, age 3 By 1861, the family is in Grantham Township in Lincoln County, Canada West. Irritatingly, the entire page shows only the initial of the given name of the individual followed by the surname. Still, the family is reasonably identifiable. A female child, M. Black, shown as 8 years of age we may say is Magdalene B. Black. See notes under her name. John Black is a widower. The children are shown as being born in Scotland, except for the youngest, a female, J. Black, age 6 (Janet). She is shown as being born in Pt. Dalhousie. Since the previous youngest child in this census is age 8 and born in Scotland, we must believe that the family came to Canada between 1853 and 1855. A 1901 census page for Ottawa shows sisters Lourie (rather illegibly written) and Magdalene on the same page and both state that they came to Canada in 1855. Also with the family in 1861 and listed after the children is M. Black, age 40. Looking forward to the 1871 census and, finally, to her death registration, we find that this is Margaret Black, John Black's sister. In 1871, John Black, age 50, is in Port Dalhousie Village with son Jamieson and daughter Janet. John is a cooper and Jamieson is a miller. The 1881 census shows John still in Port Dalhousie, though he is shown as living with his daughter Janet and her husband Thomas Stewart who is shown as a vessel captain. Death reg. 009732-85 Port Dalhousie, Lincoln Co. John Black died August 11, 1885, age 66 years. Cooper. Presbyterian. Born Leith, Scotland. Physician Dr. Clark.
