The marriage of Theron and Jane appears on the 5th line down. Theron Buchanan, age 24, residing Dumfries, born Canada. Parents Alexander and Betsy. Jane Hunt, age 22, residing Dumfries, born Canada. Parents John and Hannah. Witnesses Alexander McArthur of Blenheim and John Buchanan of Dumfries. On 28 February, 1861. The marriage of Theron and Jane appears in Joseph Messmore's report of marriages that runs from January of 1861 to February of 1862. Beneath, he dates his report at Plattsville on 27 February, 1862. The Buchanans were Presbyterians, but the Hunts were Methodist. Joseph Messmore had been a Methodist minister serving charges in the general area and the Hunts may have been familiar with him and favored him to perform the marriage. We may note, however, that Alexander McArthur was married to Jane Maria Buchanan, Theron's sister. Alex and Jane resided in Plattsville at the time. Alex owned and operated a foundry wherein farm implements were made. Alex and Jane probably hosted the wedding party. Theron's brother William was living near the village of Washington at this time and the distance between Washington and Plattsville is about two miles. Since the 1861 census has their uncle, John Leece, living with John Buchanan at Branchton, he also was probably in attendance. Alex was also a cousin to his wife, probably a second cousin, and hence to her brothers. The marriage probably had overtones of a family reunion. Looking at the 1861 census, it isn't difficult to see that Theron and Jane would be acquainted. The village of Branchton is greatly stretched out from north to south. John and Hannah Hunt are shown as residing in South Dumfries Township, Brant County, and contiguous names suggest a proximity to Branchton. Theron's brother John with their uncle, John Leece, are on the same page as the Hunts. Theron is with his brother Alex and his sister Henrietta in North Dumfries, but, again, they are in the Branchton area. |

Hunt, born England, and Hannah Robb, born Scotland. Informant Theron Buchanan, Galt, son. Burial Galt, Nov. 14-23. Jane's death registration shows her year of birth as 1837. It's possible that this is correct, but her date of birth as shown in the 1901 census at Galt is 18 January, 1838. Since this date was probably provided to the enumerator by Jane it is shown here. Waterdown, which is in the township of Flamborough East, may well be correct for Jane's place of birth, though by the time of the 1851 census her family was in Flamborough West Township. This receives some support from Ida Reed's transcriptions of Wesleyan Methodist Baptisms. For such a large family only one baptism is found for a child of John and Hannah Hunt - George, who the record shows as being born in East Flamboro. The year of birth for George is not reported, only the month, November, though we may approximate the year from his age of 9 which will have been as of November of 1852. This suggests a birth year for him of 1843. George was born in East Flamborough, but baptized in West Flamborough on June 2, 1844. The short story for Jane's place of birth is rather more likely that she was born near Waterdown and probably in Flamborough East Township. |
