The inscription on his gravestone in Copetown Cemetery reads: Hunt, John, d. 27 Apr 1882, aged 72y 9m, h/o Hannah Robb Also see Vol. 9, More Obituaries from Ontario's Methodist Papers, 1873-1884, Donald A. McKenzie, Global Heritage Press, 2007. Christian Guardian dated June 21, 1882, we find: Hunt, John was born in Co. Sligo, Ireland in 1810, came to Canada with his parents at age 17, and settled near Copetown. In his 18th year, he was converted, and moved some time after that to Brampton on the St. George Circuit. A few years ago, he moved to near the village of Washington. He died March 27, 1882, in his 73rd year, and was buried by the side of his parents at Copetown. Survived by his wife, sons and daughters. ('Brampton' on the St. George Circuit is more likely Branchton, considering Branchton's close proximity to St. George, not to mention the fact that John and Hannah are in residence in South Dumfries at the time of the 1861 census. Names contiguous on the census page would indicate that the family lived near Branchton. In the 1851 census (enumerated in January of 1852), the family is shown as being located in Flamborough West. John and Hannah were in South Dumfries at the time of the 1861 census, but by 1881 were in Blenheim Twp., Oxford County.) Per the above obituary, it is believed that John Hunt's parents, as shown in a transcription of Copetown Cemetery, are James Hunt, d. 29 November 1826, age 53 yrs, 6 mos., 19 dys., and Margaret Hunt (Hunt is believed to be her maiden name), d. 1 January 1862, age 88 yrs., 6 mos., 19 dys. The list of children that we have for John Hunt and Hannah Robb is per the 1851 census taken at Flamborough West. It is probably not complete. |
