NoteA Manitoba vital statistics website records the death of Sanford Augustus Cornell on 28 January, 1888 at Deloraine, Manitoba. The Manitoba death registration number is 1888-001493. (Deloraine is in southern Manitoba, close to the border of North Dakota.)

Two months later, son Frederick also died at Deloraine.

Both Sanford and Frederick are recorded on the family's gravestone at Watford in Lambeth County along with Eliza who died in 1935. The inscription is set out in such a manner as to suggest that it was all done at once. Certainly, the inscription suggests that Sanford and Frederick are buried at Saint James Cemetery in Watford. Thanks to the railway, burials of remains of persons who died at a distance are not unheard of. We have, however, two newspaper items.

First, a brief article on page 4 of the Manitoba Free Press dated March 2, 1888, quotes an undated Brandon Times article which in turn quotes a Mr. George Cowan, Sanford's brother-in-law, to the effect that the widow will move back to her old home near Watford as soon as the 'spring opens'. It refers to the deaths of her husband and 'children' (plural). This last may be a typographical error for we also have...

Boissevain, March 19
Freddie Cornell, aged 11 years, only son of the late Dr. Cornell, died on Sunday. The family left for Ontario this morning taking the body with them.

(Yes, there is a disconnect, datewise, with the two articles. )

So, it's reasonable to say that son Frederick is buried in Watford. Sanford is commemorated on the stone in Watford, but may be buried in Manitoba. A direct obituary for Sanford has yet to be found.

Eliza Ann Cowan Cornell had five children for whom we have records. Four of them, all but Frederick, appear with Eliza in Watford in the 1891 census. It is possible that there was another child and death in Manitoba, but no record for a sixth child has been found. Add to this, an obituary for Eliza appears on the front page of the 19 July 1935 edition of the Winnipeg Evening Tribune. This mentions children both surviving and predeceased and it does appear that Sanford and Eliza had only five children.
