Note | A birth registration for Andrew Richardson Pullin has not been found. His middle name is taken from birth registrations for his children. Andrew, in his marriage registration, identifies his parents as Felix and Melissa Pullin, and they are in Dereham Township, Oxford County, at the time of the 1871 census. In his marriage registration, Andrew gives as his place of birth Brownsville, Ontario. There is a Brownsville in the Durham Region, but there is also one in Dereham Township of Oxford County and which we will identify as the birth place of Andrew. Looking at an antique map, it's tempting to think of Brownsville as little more than a corners. A post office, however, was established there in 1854, and was still in operation as late as 1986. For which reason it seems right to identify Brownsville as a village. (See Floreen Carter's Ghost & Post Offices of Ontario, 1986.) In 1881, the family is still in Dereham and with them is son Andrew, age 6. By the 1891 census, the family is in Woodstock, the county seat of Oxford County. At the time of the 1901 census, Melissa Pullin is a widow and lives in Woodstock as a lodger. Andrew is working as a domestic in the household of Alexander and Ida Harvie in North Dumfries Township. Also in the same household is Hattie Harvie, Andrew's future wife. Andrew and Hattie are buried in Section 3 of Mountview Cemetery in Cambridge/Galt. Andrew's parents, Felix and Melissa, though they lived in Dereham Township in earlier years, not far from Tillsonburg, and in Woodstock rather later, they are buried in Harris Street Cemetery in Ingersoll. |
