Note | The gravestone commemorating Andrew Burnet and his wife Isabel Nichol is in section 2 of Mountview Cemetery in Cambridge/Galt. This supplies the dates of death for the couple. Andrew died in Traquair, Scotland, and Isabell, enroute to family in Canada, died on Lake Ontario, near the port of Hamilton. The Waterloo Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society provides a transcription of the stone: Erected/In Memory/of Andrew Burnet/who Died at Tranquair/Scotland/on the 19th, Nov. 1823/in his 63rd year/Also of his Wife/Isabel Nichol/who died on Lake Ontario/while on her passage to this place/on the 27th Sept. 1831/in her 66th year Isabel was buried in what became a family cemetery on a corner of the Scott farm. In later years this cemetery appears to have been moved to Mountview in Galt. Certainly, commemorative stones are at Mountview. It is also believed that the remains, at least of adults, were moved to Mountview. It is possible that the graves of some small children were never found or their remains moved. Note that Andrew and Isabel had two sons named Thomas, the first born in 1793, and the second in 1803. The first Thomas will have died before the second Thomas came along. |
