On 13 Aug. 1858 Mary Crandall on her website of Ontario marriages, provides a transcription of marriage notices as they appeared in the Berlin Chronicle. The paper of August 24, 1858, notes the marriage on the 15th at the Wellington Hotel in Guelph of John McFarlane, painter of Galt to Miss Mary Ferguson of Dumfries. Robert Torrance was a prominent Presbyterian minister, later a Moderator of the Presbyterian Church. At the time of the McFarlane-Ferguson marriage, he was located in Guelph. |

| Note | We have little information for John McFarlane. He was present with his wife Mary and son Robert as of the 1861 census at Galt. By 1871, Mary is a widow. Rosemary Ambrose, via the Waterloo Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, provides some transcriptions of death notices that appeared in the Dumfries Reformer. This newspaper's issue of 20 July, 1864, shows the death of John Macfarlane, age 33, in Galt on 12 July, 1864. He is shown as a house painter and this is his trade as it appears in the 1861 census. A place of burial for John McFarlane has not been found. His death was prior to the establishment of Mountview in Galt. The sons of John and Mary, however, were baptized in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Galt. At the time of John's death in 1864, St. Andrew's was still receiving burials. They only ceased to do so when Mountview Cemetery came into existence. In later years, St. Andrew's cemetery was in poor shape and the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire (I.O.D.E.) erected a pergola in St. Andrew's Park (actually the old cemetery). The pergola was created from cemetery stones that they'd collected and that were reasonably whole. John McFarlane's stone does not appear in a transcription of the pergola, but it seems likely that he was buried in St. Andrew's. When The First Church cemetery at High Park was razed in the 1880s, remains and stones were mostly moved to Mountview. It is understood that, mostly, the St. Andrew's burials were not moved. |
