Mary Crandall on her website of Ontario marriages, provides a transcription of marriage notices as they appeared in the Berlin Chronicle. The paper of August 24, 1858, notes the marriage on the 15th at the Wellington Hotel in Guelph of John McFarlane, painter of Galt to Miss Mary Ferguson of Dumfries.

Robert Torrance was a prominent Presbyterian minister, later a Moderator of the Presbyterian Church. At the time of the McFarlane-Ferguson marriage, he was located in Guelph.

NoteShe Mary Ferguson was baptized on 14 July 1833 at First Church in Galt. This is on the first page of the First Church baptisms (which is to be found at the United Church Archives in Toronto, microfilm LCM-30.) The list of baptisms to the 1850s is frustrating in that only the child's name is given and not those of the parents. The 1834 assessment for Dumfries Township shows households for Duncan Ferguson and John Ferguson. Given what we have for Mary's age in later census information, this baptism is likely for Mary, Duncan and Sally's daughter.

Mary Ferguson has not been found with certainty at the time of the 1851 census. However, her marriage registration dated 1858 leaves no doubt that she is the daughter of Duncan and Marion. The 1861 census shows her with John McFarlane, house painter, and they appear in this census in Galt. With them is son Robert age 1.

By 1871, Mary is shown as a widow in Galt with sons Robert, age 10, and John Duncan, age 8.

By 1881, Mary, still in Galt, is shown with son Robert, age 20. He is a school teacher. She keeps a boarding house and a number of boarders are listed.

Beyond this, she has not been found in Canada. Hugh Cant in his book Historical Reminiscences of Galt, undated, but apparently written around the time of the First World War, states that Mary is still alive and living in Australia. It seems reasonable that she followed a son to Australia and died there.

We take the dates of births and baptisms for Mary's sons, Robert and John Duncan, from a transcription of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church records, Galt. The transcription was done by Rosemary Ambrose.
