William Colvin

ID # 4208, (1828-1863)
FatherAndrew Colvin (1800-1881)
MotherAgnes Law (1807-1888)
BirthWilliam Colvin was born on 18 September 1828 at Midholm, Parish of Bawdon, Co. of Roxborough, Scotland.
MarriageHe married Margaret Fleming, daughter of John Fleming and Margaret Dobbie, on 24 September 1852.
The date for the marriage of William and Margaret is taken from the Colvin family bible. It does not state where the marriage took place. We know that a Presbyterian church was present in Glen Morris from 1853 at least. They may have been married in Glen Morris, though Paris is also a possibility.

DeathHe died on 3 January 1863 at Glen Morris, Brant Co., at age 34.
BurialHe was buried at Glen Morris Cemetery.
NoteInformation for names and dates of the infant children of William and Margaret as well as William and Margaret themselves is taken from a transcription for Glen Morris Cemetery.

The logic of locale and situation is that William was a son of Andrew and Agnes. He is described as a blacksmith (as was his father) in the 1851 census taken at Glen Morris; they named three sons Andrew in keeping with the Scots' convention of naming a child after the paternal grandfather; William was born in Scotland as was his older sister Agnes. A marriage registration with a possible statement of parentage has not been found.

William Colvin died young and was intestate at the time of his death. His widow Margaret applied for Letters of Administration. In these documents, William is described as a blacksmith. No reference is made to William's parents or siblings. These documents may be found under microfilm GS1, reel 275, Brant County, nbr. 95.

The Dumfries Reformer and the Brantford Expositor have been checked for information on William's death or marriage and have also been checked for obituary information for Andrew and Agnes with no success. It seems that newspaper issues are missing or photocopied pages are in poor condition. Wills have been no assistance in genealogical information for William and land records have not been found to date.

The Colvin family bible birth page is the source for William's birth date of 18 September 1828 in Midholm, Parish of Bawdon, Co. of Roxburgh, Scotland. The death page records the deaths of the second Andrew and of John and then reads: William Colvin their beloved father died suddenly at Glen Morris on the 3rd day of January 1863, aged 34 years, 3 months, and 16 days.
