Robert Guthrie, tailer, was still living and with Edith at Georgetown in Halton County at the time of the 1871 census. His age is given as 62 and hers as 28. His year of birth is extrapolated from this census information. Robert died shortly after the census was taken.

The Ingersoll library provides transcriptions of some birth, marriage and death information. The Ingersoll Chronicle of Friday, May 23, 1862, tells that on the '29th instant' (a typographical error, the 20th obviously being intended) by the Rev. John Duff at the residence of Mr. James Phillips, cousin of the bride, Mr. Robert Guthrie, merchant, to Miss M. A. E. Nicholl, both of Ingersoll.

County marriage registrations do not typicall provide exact locations of a marriage, but the newspaper account tells us that they were married in Elora.

NoteWhen Mary Edith Nichol (apparently full name Mary Ann Edith Nichol) married Robert Guthrie in Wellington County in 1862, they were both resident in Ingersoll, which is in Oxford County. The 1861 census in Ingersoll shows Robert, age 51, apparently a widower, with four children, ages ranging from 26 to 13. Interestingly, also in the household is Mary A. Nichol, age 19, born England. Her status in the household is not shown, though, at a guess, she was working there as a servant.

By 1891, husband William is likely deceased. Mary has a boarding house in Georgetown and has her children William and Edith with her. See note under Gilbert with regard to his name.
