|Note||Mary Doud, along with Wallace Doud and his wife and child, is with her parents in South Dumfries at the time of the 1851 census. This was generally done in January of 1852 and the question asked for age was: What is your age as of your next birthday. Mary's age is given as 18. This would place her birth in 1834.|
This brings us to page 14 of the Brant County branch of the OGS's transcription of St. George Cemetery. Under the stone for the family of James E. Kitchener we find:
Mary E. Doud, April 2, 1834 - Jan 10, 1863.
James' second wife, Ellen VanEvera (Van Every) also appears on the stone and she and Mary are described as wives of James E. Kitchen.
The 1861 census shows James with his wife Elizabeth. We must believe Mary's name to have been Mary Elizabeth. Her birth year on the stone agrees with that of her calculated year of birth in the 1851 census. Also, James and 'Elizabeth' have a daughter Sophrona and Mary by such evidence as we may deduce had a sister Sophronia.
Since no record has been found of any other Doud family in the area, we must believe Mary Elizabeth Doud to be the daughter of Ira and Roxa.
