Death | He died on 24 September 1873 at age 83. |
Burial | He was buried at St. George Cemetery, South Dumfries Twp.. |
Note | Ira Doud is not found in the 1832 census of East Dumfries (see MS700 reel 1). He is found in the 1842 census in Dumfries Township. (The 1842 census for Dumfries is identified by Library and Archives Canada as being St. David's Ward, Toronto. This is incorrect. An examination of the names of Dumfries worthies, not to mention that Galt and Paris land owners are listed, will provide sufficiently convincing evidence.) The U.S. 1830 census as found on Ancestry has been examined and there was an Ira Doud in Clarence, Erie County, New York, who is probably Ira the husband of Roxa, but this is not certain. The Abstract Indexes for South Dumfries have not yet been examined, but the 1842 census for Dumfries and the 1851 agricultural census for South Dumfries agree that Ira Doud was located on a fraction of lot 4 on the 5th concession. The 1842 census shows him not yet in full possession of the lot - the owner, or perhaps mortgage holder was a Dickson. The first name or initial of the Dickson is totally illegible, but he will have been a son of William Dickson, the founder of Dumfries Township. Beyond that, we may note that Mary Doud, age 18, who appears with her parents in the 1851 census in South Dumfries, is shown as being born in the States. She was born in approximately 1834 and so we may say that the family came to Canada between 1834 and 1842. For the moment, that's as close as has yet to be found. We are able to show six children for Ira and Roxa whose identities as such may be reasonably defended. There were likely a number more, quite possibly some who remained in the United States. Certainly, in the 1850 U.S. census, a search of the Ancestry census index shows three Ira Dowds in different counties in New York State. For the children listed, we rely on the transcription of St. George Cemetery which was done by the Brant County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society and death registrations as held by the Archives of Ontario. A will for Ira in surrogate court records is not indexed. He likely divested himself of his land prior to his death. It does appear to have been in possession of William Wallace Doud in later years, but this remains to be more thoroughly examined. Death reg. 030872-73 South Dumfries, Brant Co. Ira Doud died 24 September, 1873. Age 83, farmer, born Massachussetts. Cause of death accident five weeks. Doctor J. B. Lundy. Informant William W. Doud, farmer, South Dumfries. Religious denomination Baptist. Registrar David Baptie, South Dumfries. Ira and Roxa are buried in St. George Cemetery with son William Wallace Doud. (A note here for other researchers. Such information as has been found for Ira Doud is based on Canadian sources. I am aware of trees that indicate that Ira had a first wife and that Roxa Clemons was his second wife. I am unable to locate from my own resources satisfying evidence to support this. That Ira was married twice may well be correct and civil commentary and corrections are always welcome, but solid and reasonable evidence should accompany any commentary.) |
