Note | We have very few sources of information relating to Samuel S. Doud: The 1851 census in Townsend Township, Norfolk County - see page 93. This gives his age as 33. He is said to have been born in New York and is a Baptist. The second source is the transcription of his gravestone in Culver Cemetery in Townsend Township. Samuel died in 1853. The Norfolk County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society transcribed this cemetery, though the updated transcription, done in 2007, is undated so far as the original is concerned, it is believed to have been done in the late 1980s or early 1990s. The transcription of Samuel's stone reads as follows: In Memory of / Samuel S. Doud / Who died Aug. 13th, 1853 / Aged 33 yrs. 7 mo's & 22 days. From this, we calculate his date of birth to December 22, 1819. This may only be an approximation. We do not have direct evidence, but Samuel Doud had a son Ira. Eleanor Babcock, Samuel's wife, was almost certainly born in Dumfries Township. One remaining source of information is the 1842 census of Dumfries Township. (This is headed as St. David's Ward, Toronto City, by Library and Archives Canada, and, hence, by Familysearch. This is wrong. Unquestionably the persons listed are citizens of Dumfries Township.) Ira Doud is present on lot 4 of the 5th concession. Enumerated immediately following the listing for Ira is that of John L. Babcock. He is shown as being on lot 3 of the 5th concession, and John L. Babcock is the brother of Eleanor Babcock, the wife of Samuel Babcock. C5-L3 is the property mentioned in Elisha Babcock's will, and while sometimes concession and lot numbers that appear in census and assessment records suffer for want of accuracy, this information seems solid. Since the circumstantial evidence is compelling, we may say that the parents of Samuel S. Doud were Ira Doud, born in the U.S. in approximately 1790, and Roxy Doud, born in the U.S. about 1797. |
