Note | Such information as we have for Hugh McNulty is derived from databases provided by Familysearch, Ancestry and Find-a-Grave. Border crossing information is particularly helpful. Two databases provided by Familysearch show Hugh as being born in 1869 at Albion Mines in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. One is Nova Scotia Births and Baptisms, 1702-1896, and the other is Canada Births and Baptisms, 1661-1959. Both date Hugh's birth to 13 November, 1869. Oddly, a delayed birth registration for Hugh was filed in 1932 by John Gray of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, the brother of Janet Gray, on behalf of Hugh McNulty. This dates Hugh's birth to 13 November, 1871. Considering the information that we have from the above two mentioned databases, we must view the year in the delayed registration as an error. The McNultys have not been found in the 1871 census. By 1881, the family is in Manitoba Extension. The enumerator used only initials for the family, but the parents are shown as born in Scotland and the children as born in Nova Scotia. By 1891, Hugh is with his parents in Lethbridge, Alberta. He is age 21, born in Nova Scotia, and a miner. In 1901, at Lethbridge, on a page that has either survived only poorly or was badly written, we probably have Hugh with his wife 'A.' and son William, age 1. If this is indeed the family, then the implication is that Hugh and Asenath will have met and married by 1899, probably in Alberta. Asenath may have gone to Alberta with a family member. This is not certain. In the 1906 western census, Hugh is with his father and a brother at Lethbridge. His wife and children are not present. The 1911 census appears to show Hugh at Medicine Hat and agrees with a land grant for Hugh McNulty at township 10, range 22, meridien W4. His wife is shown as Anna. The children's names as questionable in terms of other information available. Since the figures 10-22-W4 appear with Hugh's name at the time of the 1916 western census at Lethbridge, it seems reasonable that the Medicine Hat heading on the 1911 census was administrative. The 1916 census shows Hugh on his own near Lethbridge, the figures, as shown above, 10-22-4 being listed against everyone on the page. Interestingly, he is next door to William Kynoch and his family, apparently his brother-in-law. To leave it at this, however, may not be entirely accurate. The 1916 census also shows a page for 'a part of the City of Lethbridge'. This shows: Hugh McNulty at 333 15th St. N., age 44, born Nova Scotia, breakman railway. Asenath B., 38, born Ontario. James W. 16 Jeannette V. 15 Clarence H. 13 Gordon C. 11 Elizabeth Mary 8 Grace 6 All the children are shown as being born in Alberta. It does appear that for purposes of the 1916 census, Hugh was enumerated twice. The on July 29, 1918, Asenath, accompanied by son, enters the United States at Eastport, Idaho, destined to a friend in Seattle. She gives as a contact her husband Hugh in Lethbridge. Then in 1919, Hugh also crosses the border at Eastport, Idaho, accompanied by his children Minnie, May, and Grace, as well as his mother-in-law Asenath Kynoch, age 75. Hugh gives as a contact his father, James McNulty, in Lethbridge. He and his children are destined Spokane. In the 1920 census at Seattle Hugh is present with his wife. He is shown as a telephone lineman. Children May, Grace and Clarence are with them as well as his mother-in-law Asenath Kynoch. By 1921, however, Hugh is back in Lethbridge on his own. Later census information is not yet available, but Find-a-Grave shows a photo of a gravestone for Hugh McNulty in Mountain View Cemetery, Lethbridge, death year 1948. |
