Note | Support for Israel Hoyt and Mercy Raymond being the parents of Raymond Hoyt is from two sources. By way of Library and Archives Canada, an excerpt is provided from the Hoyt Family Fonds, CAIN nbr. 159758, Council of Archives, New Brunswick, a portion of which is as follows: Loyalist Israel Hoyt (1742-1803) the son of Joseph Hoyt, was born in Norwalk, Connecticut. He married Mercy (Mary) Raymond, and they came to what is now New Brunswick on the ship 'Union' in the spring fleet of 1783, settling at Kingston, Kings County. Israel and Mercy had six children: Hezekiah, Samuel, Israel Jr., Raymond, Anna, and Esther. Israel was one of the first church wardens of Trinity Church, Kingston, elected in 1784. Unquote The second source, rather more sketchy, appears in A Genealogical History of the Hoyt, Haight, and Hight Families: with Some Account of the Earlier Hyatt Families, A list of the First Settlers of Salisbury and Amesbury, Mass., etc. by David W. Hoyt, Providence, 1871. Page 426 gives a list of the children of Israel and Mercy. The associated information has problems, but does mention that son Raymond Hoyt married Eleanor 'Ghent'. To update, a brief sketch of Israel's life may be found on page 74 of Sharon Dubeau's work, New Brunswick Loyalists, A Bicentennial Tribute. While this does not add a great deal to Israel's biography, it does confirm the above and tells that in 1784 he received a grant of land on the Kennebecasis River, Kingston Parish, Kings County. He was a shoemaker by trade and he was appointed a vestryman in the first church established in Kingston in spring of 1784. He died at Kingston on 3 May, 1803, at age 60. Two sons also died there: Israel died 6 January, 1800, aged 24, and Samuel died 21 April 1860, age 84. All at buried in the Church of England Graveyard at Kingston. |
