| Note | Find-a-Grave as well as Iowagravestones.org provide us with the inscription for Thomas on the Matthews family stone in Fairview Cemetery, Earlville, Delaware County, Iowa. It says that he was killed on 2 July 1869 at Hamilton, Nevada.The stone gives his age as 41 years, 9 months and 13 days. His date of birth is calculated from this. Sue Silver of Hawthorne, Nevada, has a PDF document available online, dated March 25, 2013, and this is entitled Hamilton Cemetery, Death & Burial Research Notes. She quotes from several newspaper clippings, but essentially tells a story, with one or two possible modifications, but which comes down to this. Thomas Matthews was the sheriff of Mojave County. There was an altercation in which Matthews attempted to intervene. He was stabbed through the heart and died instantly. His killer at first escaped, but was later captured and convicted of murder in the second degree. It does appear from one of the clippings that Thomas is buried in the Hamilton Cemetery. Thomas was apparently unmarried. |
