Sidney B. Lawrason
ID # 354, (1845-1917)
Father | Purvis Douglas Lawrason (1814-1880) |
Mother | Charlotte Temple Shook (1817-1885) |
Birth | Sidney B. Lawrason was born in April 1845 at Dumfries Twp. |
Marriage | He married Melissa Harriet Coleman, daughter of John Coleman and Sabrina Caroline Smith, on 25 December 1865 at St. George, Ontario. MS248 reel 5 Brant County Vol. 1 page 168, no. 274 Return of marriages solemnized as below for the year ending 31st day of December, A.D. 1865 by Thos. L. Keough, Wesleyan Methodist Minister. Sidney Laurason, 20, born and residing S. Dumfries, parents Purvis D. and Charlotte Melissa Coleman, 18, born Beverly, residing S. Dumfries. Parents John and Sobrina Dave of marriage 25 December, 1865 Witnesses E. W. Vrooman and P.E. Coleman, South Dumfries. Sidney's mother's maiden name was Shook. She was Charlotte Temple Shook, the daughter of Peter Shook and Lydia Marlatt. The witness P.E. Coleman is clearly the bride's sister, Phoebe Elizabeth Coleman. The initials for the other witness, E. W. Vrooman, are clearly written, but who he or she may be isn't at all clear. At the time of the marriage, the bride's parents were resident at Harrisburg (in South Dumfries). The rather large family of Admiral Nelson Vrooman was at Harrisburg as well. None of them, however, are obvious candidates. It is possible that E. W. Vrooman was of the family of Nelson Vrooman's uncle, Arents Schuyler Depeyster Vrooman. Arents removed from Beverly Township (lot 4, concession 1, near Harrisburg) in 1842 and settled in Garafraxa Township in what became Wellington County, but maintained connections with the Beverly-Dumfries area. Again, however, none can be reasonably identified as the witness E.W. Vrooman. |
Death | He died on 24 October 1917 at C3-L6, South Dumfries Twp., Brant Co., at age 72. |
Burial | He was buried at St. George Cemetery. |
Note | According to biography in a Brant County Gazette, Sidney's father wasPurvis Douglas Lawrason (1814 or 1815 - Oct. 21, 1880), son of John Purvis Lawrason (1793-Feb. 4, 1865). Sydney's mother was Charlotte Temple Shork, daughter of Peter and Lydia. John Purvis Lawrason was a son of Miller Lawrason (1768 - 1847) and Elizabeth Purvis (1770 - 1834), early settlers of St. George, Ontario. Sidney Lawrason was Miller and Elizabeth's great grandson. Sidney, husband of Melissa, was second cousin to Sydney Lawrason, husband of Phoebe, Melissa's sister. The 1911 census places the family in South Dumfries at Concession 3, lot 6. By this time Melissa is dead; with Sidney is daughter Melissa, age 42 and son John, age 34. Death reg. 008288-17 South Dumfries, Brant Co.
