Vol. 1 page 168, no. 274
Return of marriages solemnized as below for the year ending 31st day of December, A.D. 1865 by Thos. L. Keough, Wesleyan Methodist Minister.

Sidney Laurason, 20, born and residing S. Dumfries, parents Purvis D. and Charlotte
Melissa Coleman, 18, born Beverly, residing S. Dumfries. Parents John and Sobrina
Dave of marriage 25 December, 1865
Witnesses E. W. Vrooman and P.E. Coleman, South Dumfries.

Sidney's mother's maiden name was Shook. She was Charlotte Temple Shook, the daughter of Peter Shook and Lydia Marlatt.
The witness P.E. Coleman is clearly the bride's sister, Phoebe Elizabeth Coleman. The initials for the other witness, E. W. Vrooman, are clearly written, but who he or she may be isn't at all clear. At the time of the marriage, the bride's parents were resident at Harrisburg (in South Dumfries). The rather large family of Admiral Nelson Vrooman was at Harrisburg as well. None of them, however, are obvious candidates. It is possible that E. W. Vrooman was of the family of Nelson Vrooman's uncle, Arents Schuyler Depeyster Vrooman. Arents removed from Beverly Township (lot 4, concession 1, near Harrisburg) in 1842 and settled in Garafraxa Township in what became Wellington County, but maintained connections with the Beverly-Dumfries area. Again, however, none can be reasonably identified as the witness E.W. Vrooman.

DeathShe died on 26 December 1910 at St. George at age 63.
BurialShe was buried at St. George Cemetery.
NotePioneers of Beverly (John A. Cornell, originally published in 1889) states the following: The Coleman family came in 1812. There were two brothers, John and William. John settled on a farm which runs down to the third concession. Mrs. S.B. Lawrason of St. George is one of the family.

Mrs. S. B. Lawrason is Melissa. Her sister Phoebe married Sidney S. Lawrason, son of Purvis Douglas Lawrason. Phoebe's death registration gives her parents as John Coleman and Sabrina Smith. Melissa's death registration gives her parents as John Coleman and Sabrina Smith. Ergo, they were sisters.

Melissa's death registration, which squeezes in all her names including her maiden name of Coleman, gives her name as Harriet Melissa. The 1901 census gives it as Mellissa H. She certainly went by Melissa. Melissa's death registration number is 007576-10.

The 1881 census indicates that Melissa and Sydney had a son Frederick. There is a Frederick buried in the St. George Cemetery who fits theapproximately birth year given: Lawrason, Frederick Douglas, D.D.S., b. 1871, d. 1928, h/o Jessie Dickie Lawrason (Arthur). Also his wife: Lawrason, Jessie Dickie (Arthur), b. 1873, d. 1946, w/o Frederick Douglas Lawrason.

Between censuses and gravestones, there is a confliction about birth years for young Melissa and Frederick, unless they were twins.
