ID # 3400, (1853-1877)
Birth | Helen Clark was born in 1853 at Scotland. |
Marriage | She married McKendree Mulholland, son of George Mulholland and Jennett Robertson, on 24 February 1875 at Beverly Township. Mrge Reg. 010061-75 Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co. McKendree Mulholland, 22, bachelor, farmer, born and residing Beverly. Parents George Mulholland and Jennett Mulholland (maiden surname Robertson). Helen Clark, 21, spinster, born Scotland, residing Beverly. Parents George Clark and Helen Clark (maiden surname Douglas). Witnesses Philip Rudel of St. George and Oliver Neff of Beverly. On 24 February 1875 at Beverly by Rev. Robert Hume of St. George. The groom was Episcopal Methodist and the bride Presbyterian. The parenthetical remarks relating to the surnames of the mothers are almost certainly inserted by township registrar Wallace McDonald rather than shown on the original form sent to him by the Rev. Hume. McDonald knew his people and was careful in his identifications. |
Death | She died on 30 November 1877. |
Burial | She was buried at Troy Cemetery. |
Note | Death reg. 017316-77 Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co. Ellen Mulholland, wife of McKendree Mulholland, died Dec. 7, 1877, age 24. Born Scotland. Cause of death consumption, 4 months. Informant (and physician) Dr. N.S. Mainwaring, St. George, Co. Brant, on Dec. 13, 1877. The above date of death conflicts with the information on Helen's gravestone in Troy Cemetery which shows her death date as 30 November 1877. Per the transcription of the Hamilton Branch of the OGS, this reads: Helen D. Clark Mulholland, Nov. 30, 1877, aged 24 yrs., 1 mo., and 23 dys. Wife of McKendree Mulholland and daughter of George & Helen D. Clark. This agrees with Harley Misener's earlier transcription. Inscriptions on gravestones, especially when made in some years following a death are error-prone. This conflict, however, has the look of a clerical error. Unless a newspaper item is found, we can't be certain as to which is correct. Helen's father, George Clark, came from Scotland with his wife Helen. He is buried in the Old Pioneer Presbyterian Cemetery in St. George along with several of the children of George and Helen. George's grave survived sufficiently that there is a transcription provided by the Brant County Branch of the OGS. We must believe that his wife Helen is buried there as well, but her stone has apparently not survived and has not been transcribed. This researcher has been twice to the cemetery and, when last seen, was in poor condition. Many of the stones were flat and at least partially buried. George ran a general store at Troy and was the postmaster for quite some years. At the time of the 1871 census he appears to be a widower. In 1876, at Bothwell in Kent County, he married Isabella Templeton Coleman, the widow of Andrew Coleman of Beverly. Isabella is buried in St. Catharines. |
