| Note | Very little information about William Booth has been found. On his marriage registration with Sarah, he is shown as a widower. His first wife's name is unknown. He is also shown as a piano tuner. At the time of William and Sarah's marriage, he is said to reside in Toronto but to have been born in Napanee. His parents' names are given as John and Nancy. The 1851 census for Richmond Township in Lennox and Addington Counties shows a William and Nancy Booth with several children, including a son William, age 5, which would be approximately correct, but is questionable so far as his father's name is concerned. It should be noted that Napanee is located in Richmond Township. That William, age 5, is the William that eventually married Sarah Lawrason seems likely, but not certain. What we may say is that marriages for young William's siblings present their mother's given names as Nancy Ann. The 1861 census presents William's parents as William and N. Ann Booth and shows his own age as 14. This same William is still with his parents in 1871 in Richmond Township and the family is farming. If this William is indeed Sarah's husband then he must have married shortly after this census and then child Maud must have been born in short order, or our interpretation of the information is all wrong. Now found is a marriage registration for William Boothe and Mary Sexsmith dated October 11, 1873 in Richmond Township. William's parents are shown as William and Nancy. No death for Mary has been found nor a birth registration for a child. The 1881 census places William and Sarah in London, Ontario. There, William is shown as a traveler. Both William and Sarah are shown as age 37, which may be correct for William, but a few years light for Sarah. With them are Emily Fawcett, Sarah's daughter by her marriage to Thomas Fawcett, and Maud Booth, age 9. The handwriting is difficult, but the child's name is apparently Maud. |
