A page of marriages for Ainslie Street Methodist appears on microfilm MS5 reel 2. This appears to be from the church register, though it seems to be the same form that was used for the county registers pre-July of 1869. The page in question covers 1889 marriages and the only amendment for the above registration is that it shows both Monty and Elsie as residing Troy. Monty's place of birth is shown as Beverly, but Elsie's is shown as Troy. |

Note | Monty Lovegrove's birth was prior to July of 1869 when registrations were required for births. Hence, we have no birth registration for him such as would provide his full and correct name. Other sources have survived, however. A transcription for Mountview Cemetery, Galt/Cambridge, provided by the Waterloo Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society is a place to begin: Section 5, 20W-52 Lovegrove/in loving memory of/L. Monty Lovegrove/1869-1946/his wife/Elsie Laidlaw/1869-1918/Mildred their dau./1904-1918/his wife/Linda Bechtel/1894-1958 (2 veteran's crosses) (BC - burial card - Malinda Martin) Footstones A) Mildred B) Linda C) Guy 1902-1970 As Monty's marriage registrations make clear, he was the son of Thomas Lovegrove and Elizabeth Whittington. Monty's first name probably came from his mother's brother, Levi Whittington. Monty's marriage registration with Elsie Laidlaw simply identifies him as Monty Lovegrove, but his marriage to Linda Bechtel identifies him as Levi Montressa Lovegrove. The 1871 census in Beverly shows him with his parents, and identifies him as Montressah, age 2. The 1881 census shows him as Montresah, age 12. After that point, such information as we have, shows his name as Monty. Monty spent much of his life in Galt, but his roots go back in Beverly and Ancaster Townships. His father, Thomas Lovegrove, age 28, appears in Beverly in the 1861 census with his parents James and Ann, ages 74 and 65. They were all born in England. By 1871, Thomas is married to Elizabeth Whittington and they have four children, of whom Montressah is the third. The census shows them in the household next to George and Barbara Whittington. George was born in England, but Barbara was born in Canada. According to Ancaster's Heritage, book 1, page 222, a Jeremiah Bishop came to Beverly from Rhode Island in 1816. He moved to Ancaster in 1840 and purchased a portion of lot 15 on the 1st concession of Ancaster in 1850. He married Sarah Blasdell and their eldest daughter, Barbara, married George Whittington. Their daughter Elizabeth married Thomas Lovegrove. As mentioned under the marriage registration for Monty Lovegrove and Melinda Bechtel, they were married by William Merton Lovegrove, Monty's brother. They were sons of Thomas Lovegrove and Elizabeth Whittington. When Elizabeth died in Galt in 1930, Monty was the informant in her death. She was buried in section 6 in Mountview. Likewise, William Merton Lovegrove and his wife Meta Drake are buried with them, William dying in 1940 and Meta in 1965. They appear on Mountview's burial cards which were transcribed by the Waterloo branch of the OGS. |
