Marriage reg. 026091-20 Galt, Waterloo Co., Ontario Alfred Lawrence Himes, 32, bachelor, sawmaker, Presbyterian, born and residing Galt. Parents John and Lavinia Himes. Lottie Victoria Henderson, 27, spinster, forelady, Presbyterian, born Lockport, New York, USA, residing Galt. Parents Edward and Elizabeth Henderson. Witnesses: Rilla Macdonald and Herbert B. Coleman, both of Galt. On 30 June, 1920, at 18 Spruce St., Galt, Ontario, by K.J. Macdonald, Presbyterian, Galt. The marriage registration shows the father of the groom as being born in London, England, and the father of the bride as being born in Galt. Note that the witness, Bert Coleman, was Alf Himes nephew. There was a ten year age difference between them, but they were quite likely on friendly terms beyond the family relationship for both served in France and Belgium with the 111th battalion out of Galt in the First World War. The clergyman, K. J. Macdonald, was minister at First Church in Galt from 1912 (see Hugh Cant's Historical Reminiscences of Galt And Other Writings, which includes a photograph.) 18 Spruce Street was, at the time, the First Church manse. Cant's book also has a photograph of the house, which is now long gone (since the 1950s) and replaced by an apartment building. |

| Note | Lottie is shown on her marriage registration as being born in Lockport, New York. We have no registration of birth for her. Her father's place of birth, as shown on Lottie's marriage registration, is Galt. At the time of the 1911 census, Lottie is age 18 and living with her widowed mother Elizabeth at 15 State Street in Galt. With her are also brothers Arthur 15, Alfred 14, Wesley 12; sisters Rosella 9 and Edna 5. In this census, the entire family is shown as being born in Ontario. The 1901 census in Etobicoke gives us Lottie's date of birth as 24 May, 1893. Lottie appears to be the only family member born in the USA, however the form appears to be poorly written on this point. It looks as though the family returned to Canada in 1899. Death reg. 025349-47 Toronto, York Co. Lottie Himes died at Toronto Western Hospital on August 25, 1947, age 54. Residence 97 Russett Ave., Toronto. Born Lockport, N.Y. on May 24, 1893. Parents Edward Henderson and Elizabeth Cramp, both born Ontario. Informant Mrs. Wm. Cordell, 117 Benson Ave., daughter. Burial August 28, 1947, Prospect Cemetery, Toronto. A note here. Your researcher once asked Cliff Himes if he knew what his mother's full first name might have been. Charlotte? Cliff said he only ever knew of his mother's first name as Lottie. Alf Himes, her husband, would speak of her and referred to her as Lottie. She was sometimes known to the family as Lot. One grand nephew was in Sunday school and the lesson of the day had to do with Abraham's nephew Lot. The lad piped up and told his teacher that Lot was a woman's name for he had an Aunt Lot. It would be interesting to see a baptism record for Lottie. Other documents that just might show a fuller name for Lottie could be birth registrations for her children - not yet available via the Archives of Ontario - or First Church baptisms, if indeed any of them were born in Galt. The year that Alf and Lottie went to Toronto is unknown. |
