The copy of a document (one page) provided by a family connection headed State of Wisconsin, County Court, Grant County, Hugh Laird Deceased.
I R.D. Walker County Judge of said County do hereby certify that Hugh Laird, a resident of Town of Smelser, died intestate at Town of Smelser on the 4th day of October, 1862, etc.

It goes on to described a piece of land some 40 acres, minus one acre more or less, 'now used and known as the Smelser Cemetery'.

Hugh died intestate. His heirs at law are described as his sons, David E. Laird, William W. Laird, John Laird, James O. Laird, George Laird, widow Nancy Laird, all described, at the time, of the Town of Smelser. The form is in typewritten form and perhaps written in later years.

Hugh's wife Nancy was buried in Smelser Cemetery. At the time of the death of Hugh, as noted above, he owned 40 acres of land minus an acre which was used as Smelser Cemetery. Probably, Hugh is buried there.
