George Main Jr's death registration notwithstanding, this tree shows his mother as Margaret Chandler. Daughter Cora erected George's stone at Sheffield Cemetery and presents his birth year as 1846. This is not reasonable. Canadian census enumerations show mild variation, but tend to show his birth year as 1848. Certainly, the 1901 census presents his birthdate as 15 January 1848 and the 1911 census presents his birth as January 1848. This is fairly consistent with other years. The problem is that we have a clear marriage registration from the Wellington District Marriage Register for the date of marriage of George Main Sr and Margaret Hamilton. This appears in chronological order with other marriages performed by the same clergyman and the marriage date is 1 May 1849. Since this date has the appearance of reliability, it seems safe to infer that his mother was actually Margaret Chandler. Given his age at the time of his mother's death, perhaps no more than a year old, the only mother he would have known in early years would have been Margaret Hamilton and this may be the reason that his wife, Clarissa Coleman, gave Margaret Hamilton's name as his mother on his death registration. Until clear and contrary information is received, this tree will show his mother as Margaret Chandler.

One other difficulty exists. George Main Jr's death registration gives his place of birth as Beverly. This has some logic to it, however the place of birth of his half brother Emerson Main is shown as Waterloo on his marriage registration. This could be the town of Waterloo or the township, but, if true, it may mean that George Jr. was actually born there and not in Beverly. More information is needed.

It's interesting to note that the 1871 census shows George and Clarissa Main, 23 and 21, residing in Beverly. With them is Emerson Vrooman, age 13. Just why this should be isn't clear. He is almost certainly the Emorey Vrooman shown as a son of James Vrooman in Garafraxa in the 1861 census and he will be the Emerson Vrooman shown with Peter and Lucinda Drake in Ensley, Michigan, in the U.S. census of 1880. Lucinda Vrooman Drake was Emerson's aunt. Arents Depeyster Vrooman, Emerson's grandfather, was in Beverly Township until 1842 when he sold up and bought a sizable amount of land in Garafraxa the same year. Apparently his son James moved with him. Connection with Beverly Township was not lost, for Depeyster's son Elam married Caroline Main. Also, in the home of Elam and Caroline Vrooman at the time of the 1861 census at Garafraxa is Eliza Main, age 19, servant. She is Caroline's sister.
