Franklin Burson Waugh died Nov. 6, 1944, at Hamilton General Hospital. Residence 43 Forest Ave., Hamilton. Married. Born Jerseyville on March 11, 1865. Age 79 years, 7 months, 26 days. Retired. Wife Clara Coleman Waugh. Father John Ryerson Waugh, place of birth unknown. Mother's name unknown. Informant Mrs. Clara Waugh, 43 Forest Ave., widow. Burial St. George Cemetery on November 8, 1944.

According to Franklin and Clara's marriage registration, his mother's given name was Phoebe. While there is information that is tempting to interpret as being otherwise, Franklin gave his mother's father's surname as Fisher on her death registration. It seems reasonable to accept this. Franklin and Clara are buried with his parents in St. George Cemetery, or so the transcription of this cemetery tells us.

Franklin's place of birth as given as Jerseyville in his death registration. Jerseyville is in Ancaster Township of Wentworth County. It may be Franklin, shown as age 24, who appears in the 1881 census with James and Lydia Waugh, apparently his parents, but if this is at all accurate then his year of birth would compute to 1857. This certainly does not agree with his death registration.

(The Franklin Waugh who appears in the 1881 census in Brantford East Township with, apparently, his father and mother, James and Lydia Waugh, is not the Franklin Waugh who is buried in St. George Cemetery. Franklin with James and Lydia is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Brantford. His dates are shown as 1856 - 1911.)

We must believe the Waughs to have been a substantial family. Waughs appear as early as 1818 in the Ancaster Township Assessments as published by the Hamilton branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. This does not, inevitably, by and of itself provide us with Waugh family connections. There are ways to tackle the problem, but, for the moment, that's for another day.

Based on the evidence that we have it seems safe to say that Franklin's parents were John Ryerson Waugh and Phoebe Ann Fisher. Since a marriage registration for John Ryerson Waugh and Phoebe Ann Fisher has not been found it is entirely possible that, for one or both, there was a second marriage involved.

By way of an additional note here, Waughs do appear in Men of Upper Canada, Militia Nominal Rolls, 1828-1829, Elliott, Walker, and Stratford-Devai, published by the Toronto Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society in 1995.

Waughs do appear in a transcription of Jerseyville Cemetery, as provided by the Hamilton Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. This is available in digital format by way of the Ontario Genealogical Society.
