Father | John Vrooman (1812-1892) |
Mother | Henrietta (--?--) (1820-1856) |
Birth | Sarah Jane Vrooman was born in 1842 at Caradoc Township, London District. |

MS248 Reel 10, Vol. 36, page 77 Middlesex County Marriage Register Solemnized by Edward Cross, Wesleyan Minister James Lucas, 21, born Weston, residing Carradoc. Parents Clement & Sarah. Sarah Vrooman, 17 (or 19), born and residing Carradoc. Parents John & Henrietta. Witness Francis Thompson, residence Carradoc. On 30 December, 1861 The handwriting is questionable on one or two small points. The spelling of Caradoc with a double R during this time period is more frequently met with than not. |
Death | She died on 20 November 1872. |
Burial | She was buried at Cook's United Church Cemetery, Caradoc Twp.. |
Note | Sarah's marriage registration places her birth in Caradoc Township. Given that her father purchased land in Caradoc in 1836, this is probably accurate. Her year of birth is shown here as 1842, but 1844 is probably closer to accurate. Sarah Jane Lucas is how her name appears on her gravestone in Cook's United Church Cemetery in Caradoc Township. She is buried with as least three of her children. A transcription of Cook's Cemetery was done at some point by the London branch of the Ontario Genealogy Society. They transcribed her year of death as 1870. This isn't reasonable as she appears with her husband and children in the 1871 census in Caradoc Township. The stone was probably covered to some degree with sod at the time. CanGebWeb presents a photo of the stone that, while cracked, is fairly readable as some of the sod has been scraped back. Sarah's maiden name is not given, but she is shown as the wife of James H. Lucas. The OGS transcription includes son Burley who as an infant appears with the family at the time of the 1871 census. A death registration for Sarah has not been found. |
