Wellington County Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. Geo. illeg, a minister of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, for the year ending Dec. 31st, A.D. 1865

John Hall Collingridge, 20, born Oxfordshire, England, residing Township of Guelph. Parents William and Mary Collingridge.
Sarah Eleanor Morden, 17, born and residing Garafraxa. Parents Ralph and Mary Ann Morden.
Witnesses Mary Ann Jose (or Jones) and Seyler Vrooman of Garafraxa (apparently both).
On 8 Feb 1865

The only apparent candidate for the witness Seyler Vrooman is Erent Schuyler Sylvester Vrooman, the son of James Vrooman and Eliza Smith. He would be the bride's first cousin. The other witness, Mary Ann Jose, or Jones, has her surname poorly written on the form. Neither option give may be quite correct.

DeathShe died in 1872.
BurialShe was buried at McCormick Pioneer Cemetery, Eramosa Twp..
NoteComparing the age of Sarah Eleanor Morden as written on her marriage registration and interpreted from census information is at some variation.

Eleanor's full name appears to have been Sarah Eleanor Morden. She and John are in Guelph at the time of the 1871 census. With them are three children: Florence, age 5; William, age 4; and Mary Ann, age 2.

The Guelph branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has transcribed the McCormick Pioneer Cemetery in Eramosa Township, Wellington County. Apparently, the cemetery now takes the form of a cairn, or cairns, and the gravestone of Sarah appears in row 1, gravestone 8. The transcription was done in 1986 and the gravestone was probably in worn condition. The transcription reads:

Sarah Ellen 'Norden' / 1847-1872 / beloved wife of / John H. Collingridge.

A death registration for Sarah Eleanor has not been found.

If her year of death, 1872, is correct, then, looking at the 1881 census which adds one more child, Lewis, or Louis, age 10, we may say that he is her child. Also in this census is John's second wife Margaret and two children Henrietta, age 6, and John, age 1. They will certainly be Margaret's.

Beyond this, it quickly becomes evident from Margaret's death registration that she was Sarah's sister.

A death registration for Sarah has not been found, nor a marriage registration for John and Margaret.
