Note | Birth reg. 278 Schoolcraft County. Okel Buckborough, born 19 May 1894, at South Manistique. Parents George Buckborough, blacksmith, and Edith Buckborough, both born Ontario. Some notes on 'Dokie' and her family: Her name is shown as Dokie on her marriage registration. Her name is shown as Okel on her birth registration in Schoolcraft County, Michigan, but later spellings vary. Dokie is likely a nickname and this was not an uncommon practice, even on such formal documents. The spelling of the name Buckberrough varies greatly, but the Canadian family had generally settled on Buckberrough. Very early records suggest that the name was originally something like Buckberry. Okel's grandparents were James Coleman Buckberrough and Rachel Smith. We have no clear record of Rachel's parents, for no marriage registration for them has survived. We do know that Rachel was born in Beverly Township and James was almost certainly also born in Beverly. His parents were George Buckberrough and Sarah Coleman, both of whom are buried at Troy Cemetery in Beverly. James and Rachel appear to have moved to Windham Township in Norfolk County in early days of their marriage. They are buried in Bookton Cemetery. Their son George and his wife Edith spent some time in Michigan, where Okel was born, but apparently returned around 1897. Records for them in Ontario in later years have not been found. It is known, however, that George lived out his last days in California with Okel and Wyatt, dying in 1944. One other Smith angle is the fact that George Buckberrough and his wife Edith spent some time in Manistique, Michigan, where Okel was born. At that time, Sylvester Smith and his wife Henrietta Moe were living in Manistique. Sylvester spent at least some of his youth living in Dumfries Township. Henrietta was the daughter of Henry Moe of Beverly and St. George and of Teressa Coleman, the daughter of John Coleman and Elizabeth Lawrason, both buried in Troy Cemetery. No evidence has been found connecting Rachel to Sylvester. Sylvester is understood to have Weaver and Near ancestors (a Near married Schuyler Vrooman, son of James Vrooman). George Buckberrough was, however, a cousin of Henrietta Moe, for his mother Sarah Coleman was the sister of Teressa Coleman Moe, Henrietta's mother. The possible aspects of relationships for the Persons with different Beverly families are complex. |
