Charles Michael Doyle
      Charles Michael Doyle was born on 13 November 1892 in New Westminster, British Columbia.1,2 He was the son of James Joseph Doyle and Mary Ann Hamilton.2,3 He was baptized about December 1892 in St Peter's Church, New Westminster, British Columbia. His godparents were James Lewis Hamilton and Maria Caroline Eic(k)hof.2 He lived in 512 Kelly Street, Sapperton, (New Westminster), British ColumbiaG, in 1917.4

Charles was drafted under the Military Service Act on 5 December 1917.4 Prior to joining the Canadian Expeditionary Force, Charles married Ethel Cecilia Leer on 6 April 1918 in St Peter's Church, New Westminster, British Columbia.5,6 He was sent to England with the 68th Depot Battery CFA, CEF on 17 Apr 1918 aboard the SS Scotian. He arrived on 28 Apr and was stationed at Witley. Charles returned to Canada in Sep 1919 and was discharged, with the rank of Gunner, on 20 Sep 1919.4

He lived in 448 Kelly Street, Sapperton, (New Westminster), British ColumbiaG, after his discharge.4 He was a Plumber and a Maintenance Superintendant at Woodlands (The Provincial Hospital for the Insane - also known as "No. 9" for its address on Columbia St.) after October 1919.

He and Ethel Cecilia Leer were divorced on 11 November 1921 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Ethel petitioned for the divorce on the grounds of adultery and cruelty which were the only permissible grounds in Canada at the time. Since both Charles and Ethel remarried a month later, this was undoubtedly a mutually agreed upon divorce.7 He married second Gertrude Louise Falk, daughter of (--?--) Naas and Louise (--?--), on 3 December 1921 in New Westminster, British Columbia.8 He and Gertrude Louise (Falk) Doyle lived in 337 Holt Street, New Westminster, British Columbia.9 He witnessed the marriage of his brother Joseph Gordon Doyle and Gertrude's sister Ellen Gertrude Naas on 18 May 1927 in St Peter's Rectory, New Westminster, British Columbia.10 He and Gertrude Louise (Falk) Doyle moved to 44 Leopold Place, New Westminster, British ColumbiaG, about 1932.11,12 About 1942 they moved next door to 48 Leopold Place.12

For many years, Charles bred hunting dogs - usually black labradors. In the late 1940's he had an Irish setter named Casey who acted as a "guard dog" when Charles' granddaughter Faye Doyle was in her carriage on the back porch.

He was left a widower when Gertrude Louise (Falk) Doyle died on 3 November 1956.13,14 He died on 22 September 1968 of a stroke in Queen's Park Convalescent Home, New Westminster, British Columbia, at age 75.3

Charles's obituary in the Daily Columbian, New Westminster, British Columbia, on 23 September 1968 read:
"Charles Doyle Dies at 76
A well-known Royal City resident Charles Michael Doyle died at the weekend at the age of 76.
Born on Pen Row in 1892 Mr Doyle lived all his life in New Westminster.
He went overseas during the first World War.
He is survived by four sons Raymond, Chatham, Ont; James, Lethbridge, Alta; Bernard, North Surrey; Leonard, Crescent Beach; two daughters, Mrs E (Noel) Butterfield; Mrs M (Marie) Corcoran, New Westminster; 18 grandchildren, also five brothers.
Prayers will be held Tuesday at 7:30 PM in S Bowell & Son chapel, 219 6 Street. Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 1:30 PM in St Peter’s Church Royal Avenue and Fourth Street. Rev R W Griffin OMI celebrant. Interment will be in St Peter’s cemetery."

He was buried on 25 September 1968 in St Peter's Cemetery, New Westminster, British ColumbiaG.3
