Thomas Elliot died November 16, 1911, at North Water Street. His year of birth is given as 1867, which is about 20 years off. This entry must have been a handwriting issue on the part of the person writing the death submission for the form then goes on to tell that Thomas died at age 64...which subtracted from 1911 equals a birth year of 1847. Thomas is shown as a carpenter and a married man. The physician was Dr. D. Buchanan and the informant was George Elliott, Thomas' son.

The one thing that the death registration has to say is that Thomas was born in North Dumfries, a township in Waterloo County. It's difficult to come up with anything resembling a confirmation of this, but it's hardly out of the question. It only might be said that North Dumfries, as of 1847, was still a portion of the Township of Dumfries, Gore District. Within three or four years, the county system came into effect in what became Canada West (later Ontario), and the district system was done and gone.

Birth, marriage, death and census information provides us with some insight wherein all Thomas's trade as a carpenter took the family:

Their 1874 marriage registration is no help with stating their places of birth, for both Thomas and Elizabeth are said to be born in Ontario. This would not even have been the name of the province at the time of their births. We are told that Guelph was Thomas' residence, but no place of residence is stated for Elizabeth.

William Andrew's birth in 1876 still has the family in Guelph.

Elizabeth Anne, born in Guelph in 1879, and George Thomas, born in Guelph in 1880, are, along with older brother William, are shown in the City of Guelph as of the 1881 census. Thomas is still shown as a carpenter and the family is Presbyterian.

The family probably moved to Toronto some time later in 1881, for when son William Andrew died in January of 1882, they were living in Toronto (at 3 Clifford Street), and were still at 3 Clifford Street when Margaret Jane was born in August of 1882.

William Robert was born in August of 1884 in Toronto, though by now the family is living at 73 Stafford Street.

As of the 1891 census in St. Stephens Ward, West Toronto, the family is present. The street address is not given.

Mary Ellen is born in March of 1892, and by this time the family is at 114 Ulster Street.

By the time of the 1901 census, the family has moved to Galt, which is in Waterloo County. With them are three of their children, George, Margaret, and Mary. A street address is not provided.

Some portions of the 1911 census for Galt, enumerated in June, does provide street addresses, but the page showing Thomas and Elizabeth Ellen only shows their residence as Galt. With them is their youngest daughter, Mary Ellen, age 19. Since the death registrations for Thomas, who died in November, 1911, and Elizabeth Ellen, who died in 1912, show their address as North Water Street, probably, by the time of the 1911 census, this is where they resided. 'North Water Street' does cover a broad swath. A present day map of Cambridge/Galt is not much help, what with street name changes, but it does appear that the Elliotts lived just below the North Water Street hill.
