(Fergus was a town and not a township, but that is how the page is headed): Jennie Thompson Sherwood / Parents Thompson and Jane A. Sherwood / Residence and place of child's birth Fergus. / Date of child's birth Oct. 2/82 / Date of baptism Jan. 10/83 / Baptized at Fergus by M. Swan. According to page 282 of the Cyclopaedia of Methodism in Canada, Vol 2, Rev. George H. Cornish, published in 1903, Rev. Matthew Swann (so spelled) served at Fergus for the years of 1882-1883. It's a bit of a guess, but it's likely that the clergyman's surname was more regularly spelled as 'Swan'. |
