On 27th Feby, 1867 County marriage registers do not usually tell of the exact locality wherein the marriage was conducted. Sometimes, especially if it were by license, it was simply held at the clergyman's residence. At this point of time, Rev. William Willoughby was located in Oakville. It's possible that the marriage was actually held there. A newspaper record of the marriage will sometimes - not always - give the location. |

| Note | The reader may note that of the 8 children of Thompson and Jane, only 3 baptism records have been found. These have not been searched in local church records, but rather as they were reported to the central records of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, of which the Sherwood family, according to census information, was associated. We may not doubt that all the children of Thompson and Jane were baptized. Some clergy were assiduous in returning baptisms to central records, others not so much. Certainly Thompson was quite attentive in filing birth registrations for his children and such registrations have been found for all of them, or at least so far as is possible to equate to lists of the family as they appear in the various census years. Herbert Dynes Sherwood, in his marriage registration, tells that his father, Thompson Sherwood, was born in Burlington. We may date Thompson's date of birth to 9 November, 1840. This is as shown on Thompson's death registration. Burlington did not get named as such until 1877. Prior to that it was known as Wellington Square. Death reg. 039707-20 Fergus, Wellington Co. Thompson Sherwood died Apr 29, 1920, age 80. Born Ontario November 9, 1840. Married. Retired. Length of residence at place of death 66 years. Father John Sherwood, born England. Mother's name not given, but said to be born England. Physician Dr. Groves, Fergus. Informant F. W. Sherwood, son, Mitchell. Burial Fergus, May 2, 1920. Thompson and Jane's marriage registration show Thompson's parents as John and Hannah. |
