Mary Ann Miller

ID # 9250, (1836-1911)
FatherJacob Miller (1813-1883)
MotherHannah Collins (1819-1893)
BirthMary Ann Miller was born on 14 October 1836 at Pickering Township, Home District, Upper Canada.
MarriageShe married Philemon Wismer, son of David Wismer and Mary Tohman, on 7 July 1857.
Rev. Fretz, in his 1895 Wismer book, states on page 302 that Philemon Wismer and Mary Ann Miller were married on July 7, 1857. This is probably correct. Not provided is a location of the marriage, but since 1851 census places both the Wismer and Miller families in Markham Township, this is probably the place of marriage.

DeathShe died on 26 August 1911 at C6 Lot 17, Gordon Twp., Manitoulin Island, at age 74.
NoteDeath reg. 019156-11 Gordon Twp., Manitoulin District
Mary Ann Wismer died August 26, 1911. Born August 1st, 1836, in the County of York. Place of death Lot 17, Con. 6, in Township of Gordon.
Widowed. Father Jacob Miller, place of birth unknown. Mother Hannah Collins, born Ireland. Physician Dr. Baker. Informant Mary H. Gibson, address Foxey.

Foxey was a post office in central Manitoulin and, for at least a time, it was situated in the Wismer household.

Mary Ann is probably buried in Gordon Cemetery, but a certain record has yet to be found.

With Mary Ann's parental information, as it appears in her above death registration, it is possible to show at least something of her background.

Mary Ann appears with her parents in the 1851 census in Markham Township. The household is shown as:
Jacob Miller, 39
Hannah Miller, 33
Mary Ann, age 16
Phoebe, age 14
Martha, age 9
Morton, age 5
Mary Ann Collins, age 23

The census indicates that the family was Baptist.

The 1861 census shows Mary Ann with husband Philemon Wismer, still in Markham Township. (See notes for Philemon for a list of children present.)
Also present with the family is Phoebe Miller, who, per the 1851 census, was Mary Ann's sister. The place of birth for both Phoebe and Mary Ann is shown as Pickering (Township).

For notes for Mary Ann's presence in the family, see notes for Philemon for the census years 1871 and 1881.

The 1891 census shows Mary Ann in Gordon Township of Manitoulin Island with son Jacob and daughters Mary, Martha, and Ethelda.

She is still present with the family in Gordon Township, but now in the household of son Joseph Wismer, as of the 1901 census.

The 1911 census was begun on June 1 of the year. Mary Ann is still present, apparently in her own home, but surrounded by married children. She died in August of that year.
