Note | Two authors have been referenced for the early years of the Wismer family. The first and most basic is that of Rev. A. J. Fretz of Milton N.J. This book was published in 1893 by the Mennonite Publishing Co. of Elkhart, Indiana. It's title is: A Brief History of Jacob Wismer and a Complete Genealogical Family Register, etc. The book appears to be most thorough, though it isn't always easy to follow the generations. Any errors found herein are my own. The second author relied upon is Ezra Eby and, in particular, his volume 2 of A Biographical History of Waterloo Township, being a History of the Early Settlers and Their Descendants, etc. This was published in Berlin, Ontario in 1896. On one or two points, volume 1 of Eby's work may be quoted. Eby does appear to quote from the Wismer book, apparently Fretz's work, on some points. It is not a duplication, however. It should be said that Eby's tree work for the Wismers isn't thoroughgoing, but his interest is mainly in covering the Wismers of Waterloo County. For purposes of this tree, to find the connection between the Wismers of Waterloo County, to some extent already shown in your researcher's tree, and the Wismers of Markham Township, one of whom, Philemon, wound up on Manitoulin Island, it was necessary to go back to the progenitor - Jacob Wismer, and his children. No one in this tree is to be found without a connection to at least one other person herein recorded, whether it be by marriage, birth, or adoption. The aim here is to present at least something of the history of the Wismers of Manitoulin Island. Inevitably, it does include backgrounders for the Waterloo Wismers, though some notes will be found for at least the first generation of the original Jacob's progeny. For the earliest members of the family, it is necessary to depend on the aforementioned books. Further on-the-ground research is beyond my reach. Again, any errors are my own. The only other comment to be made is that the Fretz book and the two Eby volumes are quite downloadable from the internet in digital format and an interested family historian might enjoy many hours researching the family's background. What appears herein is a best an enlargement upon what appears in the works of Fretz and Eby. Jacob Wismer, born Germany approx. 1684 and died in Bedminster Township, Bucks Co., Pa., Feb. 4, 1787, age 103. Some family members believed that Jacob had first, with a sister, settled in North Carolina. Many of his compatriots, his sister included, are said to have died on the night of October 2, 1711, in the 'Indian War'. Jacob survived this and later settled in Bucks County in Pennsylvania. Jacob is said to have married three times, his last wife, Nanny, being the mother of all his children. Fretz believes that Nanny's maiden name was Sowder and does present some evidence to support this. This probably remains an open question. The children of Jacob and Nanny Wismer are as named in what is believed to be the order of their birth: Jacob, Mary, Eizabeth, Joseph, Henry, Mark, Daniel, John, Christian, Nanny, Abraham. |
