| Note | The following baptism is to be found in the 1847 pages of Chalmers Presbyterian Church at Quebec City. It originates with the Drouin Collection, but is to be found on Ancestry. It reads: Robert McBride, labourer, in the City of Quebec, and Sophie his wife had a son born on the twenty seventh May and baptized on the third October in the year one thousand eight hundred and forty seven. Named John by John Clugston Min'r. Robert McBride Sophia McBride Hannah Clugston James Clugston The the text was finished off with 'Named John by/John Clugston, seems to have been a convention of the clergyman. Also, we must believe that Rev. Clugston copied the information into the record book from some other form, for it all seems to be of the same handwriting. Also, in other records, Sophia's signature is recorded as an X/her mark. It does appear that Sophia at the least couldn't write. This was Robert and Sophia's second son that was given the name John and he appears with his parents and siblings in the 1851 census enumerated at Quebec City. The family is in Toronto by the time of the 1861 census and John is not present with them. Where, at his age, he might have been, we do not know, but we do know that he resided in Toronto in later years and died there in 1889. |
